UEFA Champion's League Final in Kiev on Saturday
It's exciting times for football fans as the widely anticipated final between Real Madrid and Liverpool prepares for kick off on Saturday.
The UEFA Champion's League competition has been held in Ukraine's capital of Kiev this year with the final match due for kick off at 19.45 on Saturday 26th May.
Many fans from both teams are preparing to make the journey to the capital today ready to watch the match. It comes after controvery surrounding high prices for accommodation; prices shot up in the run up to the matches amid accusations of local hotels and property hosts using sites such as AirBnB tried to cash in on visitors.
The spike in prices led to some Kyiv locals taking matters into their own hands to organise or low cost accommodation for visiting fans. 27 year old Victor Kylymar and friends set up a Facebook group to put toegther locals and visitors and solve accommodation problems.
Their Facebook page, Kyiv Free Couch, reads “As hotels are booked in Kyiv on 26 May, and many football fans are looking for the place the stay after the final game, local people are ready to host for free.”
On his motivation to set up the page, Kylymar said '
Three days ago we were searching Facebook and a lot of Ukrainian friends were sharing screenshots of AirBNB and Booking.com showing horrible conditions of accommodation which is available in Kiev for an unbelievable price. You can rent a whole building for months, but they want to charge for one night.
“Kiev is a big city, there are three million people living here. We thought that it wouldn’t be a problem for the tourists to be hosted in flats and we thought that people could even do this for free."
The group has attracted over 3000 members and accommodation opportunities are still available for last minute travellers.
