Ukraine Begins Official Membership of UNHRC

President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko has recently signed a three year agreement with the United Nations Human Rights Council for the country to have a three year membership. Members pledge a duty to protect human rights around the world whilst they are a member.

Of the new agreement, the President stated on Twitter on February 26th 2018:

"Having completed the mission of a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council, Ukraine has begun today a three-year membership in the United Nations Human Rights Council. The protection of human rights throughout the world, including in temporarily occupied Crimea and Donbas, is our priority!"

Prior to being elected, Ukraine served on the Council as a non-permanent member. Making up the UNHRC are forty seven member states who take on a duty to protect and promote human rights across the world.
